E S P Haynes, in Personalia (1918) describes Thomas in December 1898 when they met at Oxford.

“Edward Thomas was then, as always, tall and thin.  He had what another friend has described as a ‘golden brown face’ and deep blue eyes which sometimes became suddenly translucent and alert with interest.  His voice was a singularly melodious tenor.”
